Let’s talk Twitch emotes

Standard Twitch emotes are the premade ones offered by Twitch. Both streamers and followers are free to use them in chat comms. These ready-to-go, out-of-the-box emotes can get you a long way. However, creating a bunch of your own will help to show your channel is a level-up. And besides, they’re fun to make and share!

A few of the more common free Twitch emotes

Kappa: Shows Sarcasm, wryness of humour

Hey Guys: Twitch’s casual welcome when joining a live stream

LUL: Laughter

Jebaited: Used when someone has been tricked

So far, so good, right? However, not every live streaming experience is equal. As you build up a following and pass through subscriber milestone levels (Tiers), customizable emotes become part of the appeal. Let us explain.

Twitch tiers and Twitch emote requirements

Twitch levels and free Twitch emote requirements can get a bit confusing, so here’s a quick explanation.

Tier 1 (standard, default subscription level)

The number of emotes you can have is based on your Affiliate or Partner status and your subscriber points. Once you become an affiliate, you can start customizing your emotes.

For Twitch Affiliates, as of now:

  • You start with 5 Tier 1 emote slots.

  • As you gain subscriber points, you can unlock up to 25 Tier 1 emote slots.

  • You also get Follower Emotes (up to 5), but they’re free and not subscription-tiered.

Tier 2

You get:

1 additional Tier 2 emote

(This is separate from the Tier 1 emotes; only Tier 2+ subs can use it.)

So in total:

  • Tier 1: 5 to 60 emotes depending on sub points & status

  • Tier 2: 1 extra exclusive emote

  • Tier 3: 1 extra exclusive emote

How do I qualify for customized Twitch emotes?

If you are already a Twitch affiliate or partner, respect to you. You’re good to go with adding your customized emotes. Adding your free Twitch emotes is just one of the upgrades offered by Twitch for either Affiliate or Partner level Live streamers.

If you’re working on leveling up, here is a quick reminder of Twitch Affiliate-level requirements - a minimum of 8 hours of live streaming across seven different days, with an average of 3 viewers. Oh, and also to mention all this within a month (30 days).

To be a Partner streamer, you need to stream for 25 hours, on 12 different days, with an average of 75 viewers, all within 30 days. Upon achieving this, you access Tier 1 Standard emotes with 31 slots and five (5) additional slots on Tier 2 and Tier 3 for every unlocked subscriber points milestone.

What is the best size of Twitch emote?

Getting your emotes correctly sized means everyone, across all devices sees exactly what you want them to see.

Three sizes to accommodate different devices and circumstances.

  • 28x28 pixels

  • 56x56 pixels

  • 112x112 pixels

Twitch has kindly created a Subscriber Emote Guide which covers many more of the details of sizing and media requirements.

How to upload your customized Emotes to Twitch

  • On Twitch, click your profile picture (top right) → Creator Dashboard.
